Our Mission
*To provide 40+ households in the New Haven, CT area with vegetables on a weekly basis.
*To bring people closer to their food; where and how it is grown.
*Grow all vegetables organically and ecologically to promote a healthier environment.
What is a C.S.A.?
A "C.S.A." or Community Supported Agriculture "is an innovative way to connect farmers and consumers in a mutually beneficial relationship sharing the risks and rewards of the growing season. The consumer buys a share of the farm's harvest in advance, guaranteeing a market for the farmer's produce... For most CSAs, a share consists of an assortment of seasonal, farm-fresh vegetables, herbs ... each week during the harvest season, typically June into October." (From the Connecticut Chapter of the Northeast Organic Farmer’s Association’s Website. Visit www.ctnofa.org for more info.)
What do I have to do?
We are looking for 40+ individuals, groups, or families who are willing to:
*Join us for our third year at Eve’s.
*Buy a share for the 2010 season.
*Pick up their food on a weekly or twice monthly basis at the farm in Bethany, CT.
*Be supportive of a few novice farmers.
*Try new foods and experience fresh vegetables.
Are you certified organic?
At this current time we are not certified organic. We all have backgrounds in organic farming and believe that organic farming is the best way to farm. Currently, we consider our vegetables "ecologically grown". We are still very much attached to a main greenhouse facility which is not organic, and although we plan to use organic practices in the field, it would not be correct or fair for us to call ourselves organic.
How do share-outs work?
For 2010, we plan on beginning in mid June. We will have two expectedly small share-outs and then get into the larger ones by July. We will end in late September or early October, weather depending of course. Pick up dates will be on Thursdays from 4:30 - 6:30pm or Sundays from 10:00am - 12:00pm. It is important that you let us know if you will not be able to get your share on your normal pick up day or if you will have someone else pick up your share, so we can make proper arrangements. (We ask that you call before you stop in at any other time, because we are only at Eve's during certain parts of the day, but can usually meet with you if we have advance notice.) If you miss pick up, we will leave the shares in coolers outside the gate for 24 hours maximum, after that your share not be available.
Each week food that is ready will be laid out on pick-up tables. Each item will have a sign identifying it and a quantity of how many or how much you can select. Some weeks will have more food than others (for example, mid June is not as bountiful as late August), but we will attempt to give you a good assortment of what we have as it becomes ready. Please bring your own grocery bags, shopping bags, or canvas totes to pick up your food.
We will provide you with recipes when we can (and hopefully post them on this site as well) for some items that you may not be as familiar with or that we have an abundance of so that you can diversify your taste buds. Before you decide you don’t want something, we ask that you try it. Fresh vegetables can have a completely different taste than anything you can get at the grocery store!
We cannot guarantee what you will get each week
but below are several sample weeks of what we shared-out in 2008:
Shareout #1 - June 15th
Choice of Peas - Snap or Snow
Strawberries
Lettuce
Red Giant Mustard
Salad Mix
Radishes
Choice of Basil or Parsley
Early Tomatoes from our Greenhouse (non-organic)
Shareout #9 - August 9th
Choice of Greens
Choice of Eggplant or Peppers
Zucchini
Cucumber
Lettuce
Slicing/ Large Tomatoes
Cherry/ Grape Tomatoes
Potatoes
Scallions
Choice of Herbs
Leeks
Please note that some weeks will be more abundant than others, as shown by these sample harvest weeks during the same season. We will always provide you with whatever we have available. A good, consistent example of a weekly share would be lettuce/ salad mix, an herb, an allia (eg: scallions/ garlic), a green (eg: kale/ collards), and the "staples of the season" (eg: early spring - peas; midsummer - tomatoes).
It is important to remember....
We are local and organic. We do not have a processing plant or large company that is handling your food, and we are not spraying harsh chemicals that kill everything around the plants. Please understand that from time to time, the foods you will pick up may have bruises, cracks, dirt and the occasional bug. We try our best to make sure we share-out clean food, but it happens. To avoid this, we recommend washing and processing your food when you get it home. Coming soon - our guide Getting the Most From Your Share - How to unpack and store your food.
We encourage reusing and recycling!
Bring left over grocery bags or shopping bags for yourself and others to use to pick up food. For everyone’s benefit, please make sure they are in good condition (no holes, rips) and clean.
Fiber egg containers, shredded newspaper, coffee grounds (filters okay too), tea bags (staples removed), egg shells, carrot/potato peelings, rinds, vacuum cleaner dust, wood ash, peels, pet/ human hair, and any other non-meat food scraps. If there is something you are not sure about, please check with us before bringing it.
Tip: Store your compost items inside a brown paper bag (also compostable), inside a bucket with a lid during the week, to keep away leaks and odors. When you come for pick up, just drop the bag into the compost pile!
Full Share - $325
Pick up a full share weekly.
Half Share - $200
Pick up a full share share every other week.
*PLEASE NOTE: Half shares will be structured differently for 2010. Half sharers will be alternating with another half sharer. If this will not work for you, we can attempt to match you with another half sharer that you can split your share with weekly, however, we can no longer divide the shares ourselves. (Harvesting, washing, counting and weighing, processing, cooling, and displaying are enough for one day!) The bright side to this, is that more people can join. We will take the equivalent of 40 full shares for 2010 (a good example would be 25 full sharers and 30 half sharers).
